We’re excited to share that our new centre for advancing eye health has been officially named. Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health is due to open in St Pancras, Camden in summer 2027.

A partnership between Moorfields Eye Charity, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, the name of the new centre emphasises the collaboration and combined expertise of all three partners.

With researchers and clinicians under one roof, the centre will deliver the highest quality eye care, research and education, and the state-of-the-art facilities will ensure that patients will have access to more efficient treatments, as well as being able to take part in research more easily.

The centre has been designed with input from Moorfields patients and sight loss organisations to make sure it meets a diverse range of needs and delivers an exceptional patient experience for everyone. It is also part of the New Hospital Programme, a national initiative to transform how healthcare is delivered in the UK.

For staff, students and volunteers the new centre will provide modern spaces to work and collaborate with each other – fostering innovation between researchers and clinicians on a much closer level. There will also be dedicated staff and student well-being spaces and facilities to relax and recharge in the working day, including a rooftop garden terrace with views across London.

The Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health, under construction in Camden

Previous locations near City Road for Moorfields Eye Hospital, including the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre, and Moorfields Private, and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology will no longer provide services and will all move to the new centre in 2027.

The move to Camden will bring the partners closer to other important health and research partners, including UCL’s Bloomsbury campus, the Francis Crick Institute, University College London Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The three partners will still continue to operate under their own names while united under the same roof at the Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health, and patients can continue to follow signs for Moorfields Eye Hospital to find their way to the new centre.

This is an important milestone for our new centre for eye health that will serve communities for generations to come. The chosen name reflects the shared vision and values at the heart of the partnership between the charity, Moorfields, and UCL. None of this would have been possible without philanthropic support from the charity and the generosity of the donors who believed in the ambition of this project. This support has turned a bold vision into a tangible reality and stands as a testament to what collaboration and philanthropy can accomplish together to achieve world-leading innovation and research in eye health.
