Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows us to reclaim the basic rate tax you pay as a UK taxpayer. It means that we can claim 25p of tax for every £1 you donate at no extra cost to you. All you need to do is make a Gift Aid declaration.

Who can sign up for Gift Aid?

To be eligible for Gift Aid, you must:

  • Be a UK taxpayer
  • Pay at least as much income and/or capital gains tax as the amount of Gift Aid the charities you donate to will claim in a tax year

If you don’t pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid on your donation, you may be liable to pay the difference.

Does Gift Aid cost me anything?

Learn more

No, Gift Aid doesn’t cost you anything extra. It’s an additional benefit to the charity that comes from the tax you’ve already paid on your income.

However, if you don’t pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid on your donation, you may be liable to pay the difference.

Can I apply Gift Aid to past donations?

Learn more

Yes, you can. If you’ve made eligible donations in the past four years and were a UK taxpayer during that period, we can claim Gift Aid on those donations as long as you complete a Gift Aid Declaration form.

I’m a pensioner. Do my donations qualify for Gift Aid?

Learn more

Income from state pensions is unlikely to qualify for Gift Aid as you need to earn enough to pay income tax. We advise you to check with your tax office before making a declaration.

What do I need to do if my tax status changes?

Learn more

If your tax status changes and you no longer pay enough tax to cover the amount of Gift Aid we claim, please contact us to update your records. You can cancel your Gift Aid Declaration at any time.

Can I Gift Aid if I’m a higher rate taxpayer?

Learn more

Yes. If you’re a higher rate taxpayer, you can still Gift Aid your donations. In addition, you can claim the difference between the basic rate and your higher rate of tax on your self-assessment tax return.

Which type of donations does Gift Aid apply to?

Learn more

Gift Aid applies to most donations, but it does not apply to:

  • Donations from non-UK taxpayers.
  • Donations made on behalf of someone else or a group.
  • Donations where you receive something in return (unless it’s of nominal value, e.g an event or purchase of our raffle tickets).
  • Gifts made through your payroll.
  • Gifts from an organisation.
  • Entry into lotteries and raffles.

Can I cancel my Gift Aid Declaration?

Learn more

Yes, you can cancel your Gift Aid Declaration at any time by contacting us. The cancellation will apply to any donations you make after the date you notify us, but it won’t affect donations we have already claimed Gift Aid on.

How do I know if I’ve paid enough tax to cover my Gift Aid donations?

Learn more

You need to have paid an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax that is at least equal to the amount of Gift Aid all the charities you donate to will claim on your donations in a tax year. For example, if you donate £100 in one year, the charity can claim £25 from HMRC, so you need to have paid at least £25 in tax that year.
