The new centre for eye health advancements, Oriel.

We are delighted to announce that the Kusuma Trust has awarded us a generous grant of £2.5 million towards the new centre for advancing eye health.

This gift is a significant contribution towards making the new centre a reality, and will ensure that Moorfields can continue to provide an industry-leading experience for researchers, clinicians and patients.

The ambitious project is the result of a unique collaboration (known as Oriel’) between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity.

The Kusuma Trust is a family led philanthropic trust established in 2010. The Trust gives grants to organisations based on shared values and mutual interests in the UK, Gibraltar and India.

Since inception, the Kusuma Trust has made significant contributions in the areas of health, education and culture through capital, programme and research grants.

We are privileged to support Moorfields Eye Charity and the Oriel project, a groundbreaking initiative that will transform the future of eye care, research, and education. We hope our contribution will aid the development of world-class facilities that will inspire and educate the next generation of clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals.

The new centre for advancing eye health will be home to researchers, students, clinicians and trainees- they’ll be given fresh opportunities to work and learn together.

The new centre will also be home to cutting-edge facilities and technologies, giving patients greater access to the latest treatments and care.

We are hugely grateful to Kusuma Trust for supporting the new centre for advancing eye health. Patients will benefit hugely from the new facilities where we are creating an environment where innovation will thrive. Through this special partnership we will advance education and learning in a world-class centre that will enable us to transform the lives of people affected by sight loss

Construction of the new centre continues at pace with the building having reached its highest level in late 2024, and the installation of exterior façade panels was completed in March 2025. The new centre is due to open in 2027.

Over £75million has already been raised to support the construction of the new centre, and we are grateful for the generosity of our donors in helping make our ambitious plans a reality.
