A group of seven nurses posing together in a Nursing Day frame

Moorfields Eye Hospital hosted a vibrant and impactful nursing conference in May 2024, thanks to the support of an event delivery grant from Moorfields Eye Charity.

The conference, which was held during the same week as International Nurses Day, brought together around 170 nurses from across the Moorfields network.

Mary Masih, lead for Pathway to Excellence at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, described the event as a moment of unity”, highlighting the importance of coming together as one nursing community.

There was real joy among the staff,” she said.

There was cause for celebration at the event as Moorfields recognised the prestigious Pathway to Excellence designation – a mark of outstanding nursing practice awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Moorfields was one of six organisations to receive the Pathway to Excellence award in the UK. Mary added, Staff were commended on their engagement with the programme and for ensuring that the six standards of pathway to excellence were reflected across all areas of care.”

It wasn’t just about achievements; it was about giving people time to pause, reconnect, and receive recognition for their contribution to care.

Throughout the day, nurses engaged in discussions around professional practice and shared experiences that will inform the next phase of the Pathway to Excellence journey. Live polling and interactive sessions encouraged open conversations about how staff were feeling in their roles and what support they needed.

We wanted to create a space where nurses could talk about what really matters to them,” Mary explained.

The day included a lively mix of educational sessions, cultural festivities and fun moments – including a bubble machine, dance-offs and a flag display to showcase the diverse backgrounds of staff. It’s been amazing,” Mary concluded.

We wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of the charity.
