President of Malta supports research

President of Malta meet Rob Aldous, director of fundraising at Moorfields Eye Charity

The President of Malta, Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, visited Moorfields Eye Hospital this week where she toured the hospital and met with Maltese staff before presenting a cheque to Moorfields Eye Charity on behalf of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.

Moorfields has a longstanding relationship with Malta and Her Excellency, who was accompanied by her husband, Mr Edgar Preca, and a group of Maltese delegates has made an annual visit to Moorfields since 2012.

Of her visit Her Excellency said: “In 2015, 52 Maltese patients were treated at Moorfields Eye Hospital. I would like to show my appreciation and thank the management and the medical staff at Moorfields for the care and dedication which they show towards the Maltese and Gozitan patients who use the services of Moorfields Eye Hospital.”

The presidential party was greeted by Tracy Luckett, director of nursing and allied health professions at Moorfields, who accompanied them during their tour of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre where they learned about the trust’s research programme and paediatric services.

Tracy Luckett said: “We are most grateful to receive Malta’s continuing support and were delighted to welcome the President of Malta to Moorfields.”

As part of the visit Her Excellency met Professor Andrew Dick, director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Dr Peter Jones from the UCL Child Vision Lab. Professor Dick gave an overview of the world-leading joint research programme with Moorfields Eye Hospital and its impact on adult and paediatric ophthalmic care, while Dr Jones demonstrated how research has been translated into improvements for children’s eye tests.

Rob Aldous, director of fundraising at Moorfields Eye Charity, said: “Together, Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology are the most productive academic partnership in ophthalmology, dedicated to finding better and more effective treatments for blinding diseases to the benefit of people around the world. Charitable support plays a vital role in enabling the partnership to retain its world-leading status. I would like to thank Her Excellency for this generous gift on behalf of everyone at Moorfields Eye Charity.”
