David Denyer is taking part in the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 9 April for Moorfields Eye Charity. He has shared his story with us – read on and find out why he will be taking on this amazing challenge for Moorfields. “My first encounter with Moorfields Eye Hospital was in July 2013 when my wife, Alicia, started experiencing slightly blurred vision. She went for a standard high street optician’s eye test, which led to a recommendation to go to our local hospital for further investigation. That in turn led to an urgent referral to Moorfields – something seemingly not that major had become quite worrying.
After a few visits the diagnosis was bilateral intermediate uveitis – and not being diabetic there was no known cause or certainty of a cure, so steroids were prescribed with plenty of very unpleasant side effects. This meant the condition was controlled from worsening but not cured.
Fast forward three years, dozens of visits to Moorfields and two steroid implants means no more steroids or side effects – still no cure though, so similar treatment will be needed in future.
Until this experience of accompanying Alicia to the hospital I had no concept there were so many sight threatening conditions with no known cause or cure. Eyesight is something we all take for granted and the work that Moorfields does in researching conditions and their treatment is truly amazing. Some of the current treatments did not even exist when our first visit to the hospital took place!
In 2016 I took part in the Moorfields Eye to Eye event and the Royal Parks Half Marathon in aid of the hospital, so I was seeking a new challenge. Having completed a marathon many years ago and with an ambition to one day complete another, the opportunity to take part in the Brighton Marathon in 2017 made perfect sense. It’s a chance to say a big thank you to the work of the hospital and all their dedicated staff.
If you’d like to sponsor me, here is a link to my JustGiving page, where every penny I raise will go towards the hospital being able to help others retain their eyesight – something we all take for granted. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Denyer2 “
