Supporting Moorfields and its patients through the coronavirus pandemic
31 May 2021
Thanks to your generous donations to our emergency coronavirus appeal, we’ve been supporting our NHS staff and patients at Moorfields during these exceptionally difficult times. We’ve helped develop new wellbeing spaces and sent staff thank you gifts. We’re also investing in patient research.
Moorfields has continued to deliver outstanding patient care ensuring that people receive the critical eye care they need. It has trialled new techniques with over 15,000 video consultations, over 40% of A&E patients being seen remotely, and a cataract drive carrying out over 700 operations in a week.
Some staff have been redeployed to work in different front line hospitals, supporting the critical service provision across the NHS system and caring for coronavirus patients.
Our most successful appeal ever
Thanks to your donations, NHS Charities Together and the EBM Charitable Trust, an incredible amount was raised. We’ve been able to support the amazing Moorfields staff wherever they are, through the challenges they’re facing each day.

We want to bring long-lasting benefits to staff and patients, particularly around their health and wellbeing.
Supporting staff wellbeing
Working through the Covid-19 pandemic has had a physical, emotional and mental impact on staff. We’re funding a new wellbeing space at Moorfields Eye Hospital and improvements to staff welfare areas at several sites across the Moorfields network.
The wellbeing space is for all staff to use - whether to just step away from work, have some lunch or simply relax. Regular breaks are important to recharge the mind. A chat with a colleague in a space that is not work-related about something that is not work-related is also hugely beneficial.
Supporting patients’ wellbeing
Moorfields’ patients have been affected by the pandemic in specific ways.
We’re supporting research addressing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental wellbeing of patients with chronic eye diseases. This research will provide vital evidence to help improve their holistic care.
We’re very proud to be part of the Moorfields partnership and working closely with hospital staff on initiatives to help with staff and patients’ wellbeing through these stressful times and deliver the best outcomes for patients.

Thanks to the incredible amount raised, we also sent staff lunch vouchers and a gift voucher to treat themselves. At Christmas all staff were given a mug filled with chocolates as a ‘thank you’.
I have received my voucher - thank you so much! The last months have been extremely challenging for us all, it’s so lovely to have this recognised.

We will continue to support Moorfields and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology where it’s needed most through the pandemic and beyond with patient care, ground-breaking research and training.
