Open | Applications accepted on rolling basis
Innovation is about doing things differently or doing new things to make positive change. Our Innovation Grants aim to fund projects that will ultimately lead to improvements that will benefit Moorfields, its patients and the NHS.
The purpose of this programme is to enable staff to develop and test novel ideas to bring about impactful positive change, optimisation or improvements in clinical practice, service, patient experience and patient participation.
The innovation grant programme is designed to support discrete and defined pieces of work where the applicants have demonstrated how they will about innovation and positive change.
Is this grant suitable for your idea?
This programme has a wide remit and we will consider applications which are looking at service innovation, improving administrative process, research and improvements to patient experience.
Your proposal needs to demonstrate:
- how the outcomes will have a direct benefit and/or impact to patients within a relatively short timescale (months, not years);
- a clear and convincing problem you want to address;
- how your project will lead to innovative change.
Application deadline and decision timelines
Our innovation grants are currently open. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through the year.
We will normally aim to process applications on a bi-monthly basis.
Processing times and announcement of decisions will be dependent on availability of advisory panel members and Trustees.
Should external peer review be required, additional processing time will be necessary.
The principal applicant must hold an academic or clinical post with Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH) or the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and will normally be in receipt of salary funding for the duration of the grant. For details of all other eligibility criteria please read the programme guidelines via the link below.
How much can I apply for?
We usually expect applicants to request a maximum of £25,000 per application, although applications for up to £50,000 will be considered. Supplements will not normally be considered within this scheme.
We usually expect to make a maximum of one award per principal applicant per year.
We usually expect grants to run for a maximum duration of 18 months.

Preparing your application
You will need to prepare a detailed proposal (in Arial font size not smaller than 11 points) that complies with the instructions and eligibility criteria outlined in the specific grant guidelines.
Make sure to check out what local approvals and signatures you will need prior to submitting an application. And allow plenty of time for this step, keeping in mind the research offices will be busy with other applications.
